About Us
History of TDA
TDA originally known as Tankerton Dancing Academy, was established in September 1976 by our Founder and Principle, Helena Griffiths. Helena had a passion to give all who wanted to dance, a chance to shine, no matter their ability or background. In 1994 the Academy moved into its very own studio and now home at 70 Station Road.
Over the years, Helena has taught all ages from young children through to adults, and prides herself on building confidence and fostering a welcoming and encouraging atmosphere in the studio.
Pupils wishing to pursue a career in dance have gone on to full time dance and drama colleges including: The Royal Ballet School, White Lodge, The Arts Educational Schools, Performers College, Middlesex University, London Studio Centre, Roehampton University, Elmhurst Ballet School, Laine Theatre Arts, The Northern Ballet School, The Centre London, and The Legat School. Others have auditioned and performed with the National Youth Ballet, English Youth Ballet, The London Children’s Ballet and Junior Associates of the Royal Ballet School, London Junior Ballet and Urdang Academy.
TDA- A New Era
Today, TDA provides opportunities for all pupils to perform in all aspects of the performing arts world.
Pupils are prepared for the RAD and ISTD Examinations in Ballet, Modern, Jazz and Tap grades, medals, and vocational levels. As well as this, TDA provides regular performance opportunities at competitive and community festivals, showcases and demonstrations, shows and trips to London for Mardi Gras.
In 2026, joining the TDA family are Helena’s Grandson Charlie and Granddaughter-in-law Teresa who joined forces with Helena to expand TDA with classes in Performing arts, Musical theatre, Acting and LAMDA. So TDA has now become Tankerton Dance and Drama Academy!
